Mi-26T Helicopter

Mi-26T multipurpose, wide-fuselage transport helicopter is designed for transportation of materiel and large-size loads weighting up to 20 tons in cargo cabin and on external sling.

The helicopter was developed by MIL Moscow helicopter Plant and is serially produced since 1980 at Rostov Helicopter Production Complex “Rostvertol” PLC.

The Mi-26T is a single rotor helicopter with a tail rotor. The power plant includes two gas turbo-shaft D-136 engines.

The engine’s power characteristics allow to apply the helicopter efficiently in a wide range of altitudes and ambient temperatures, as well as to perform horizontal flight with one operating engine and landing.

The Mi-26T helicopter’s structure, equipment and systems allow to operate day and night, in simple and some adverse weather conditions, over plains, hilly and mountainous terrain.

Helicopter’s operation does not require special means of airfield maintenance (special ladders, engine and gearbox cowlings in open position are ladders), and it can be based autonomously for a long period of time.

The helicopter’s auxiliary power unit provides engines’ autonomous starting, power supply of mechanisms during loading/unloading works, airborne equipment test, air conditioning of crew cabin, cargo cabin heating and ventilation on ground when loading/unloading of self-propelled materiel.

Power plant has systems of main rotor RPM automatic maintaining and engines’ power synchronization. When one of the engines is failed, the power of another engine increases to maximum what provides possibility of safe landing with full load.

The engines are fitted out with dust protection devices, which provide protection of gas-air duct from dust and dirt.

Hydraulic system provides operation of Hydraulic Actuators and Power Drivesof other components.

Pneumatic system provides wheels’ brake and pressurization of cockpit doors and flight attendants’ compartment.

Anti-icing system allows to fly in icing conditions.

The helicopter is fitted out with oxygen equipment for crew and attendants.

The helicopter is fitted out with effective fire-fighting equipment, emergency equipment, as well as flight data/systems’ operation recorder system.

The crew cabin is pressurized, equipped with air conditioning system, comfortable, has excellent outside view, the cabin layout and flight-navigation equipment complex provide implementation of various flights in respect of difficulty and duration.

Flight Navigation system and Automatic Flight Control System allow to fly in different weather/climatic/physic geographical conditions at day and night on equipped, non-equipped routes of civil aviation, off-line flights and land-mark free terrain from equipped/non-equipped sites fitted out with radio communication equipment.

Full fueling of Fuel system is 12000 litres. To increase flight range during ferry or implementation of special operations, four additional fuel tanks are installed in cargo compartment (total fueling capacity 14800 litres) or two extra fuel tanks with 4780 litres (fueling of two tanks is limited by CG conditions).

The helicopter crew consists of 5 persons: PIC (LH pilot), co-pilot (RH pilot), navigator, flight engineer and load master. Left and right Pilot seats are located next to each other in the front of a cockpit, navigator/flight-engineer seats are located behind left and right pilot accordingly.

Four attendants can be laced in attendants' compartment behind cockpit. Folding seat of a load-master is situated there.

During operations with cargo transportation on the external load sling, load-master No.1 must be next to external sling cargo door.
To perform flights at night upon Customers requet, the Mi-26T can be equipped with night vision goggles (NVG). External and internal Lights are adapted for NVG.

Use of III-generation OVN-1 Skosok or GEO-ONV-1 at night and in low luminance conditions (5×10-4 to 1.0 lux) provides:

  • takeoff, hover, choice of landing site and landing on non-equipped sites.
  • Piloting at altitudes from 60 to 200m with visual control of underlying surface
  • Monitoring of out-of-cockpit spacing at field of view
  • Detection and identification of electric lines poles, communication line poles, separate trees, cargo vehicles on underlying surface background, at natural operating illumination of 0.5×10-3 lux at range minimum 0.5 km.
  • Implementation of rescue operations.

Weather radar installed in the aircraft provides the following:

  • detection of convective airborne moisture targets (thunderstorms, cloud packs) enabling determination of risk level for the aircraft;
  • determination of typical ground landmarks like cities, reservoir shoreline, big vessels on the water surface.
  • For international route flying Mi-26T helicopter is fitted with air traffic control equipment.
